Here is the short answer, because most articles bury it: polarized and non-polarized sunglasses protect your eyes from UV equally well, as long as both are rated UV400. Polarization is not a protection feature. It is a glare feature. Those are two different jobs, and the sunglasses industry has spent years letting people confuse them so it can charge more.

What polarized sunglasses actually do
When sunlight hits a flat surface like water, wet pavement, snow, or a car hood, it bounces back at you in horizontally aligned light waves. That is glare. It is the harsh, blinding white flash that makes you squint even though you are already wearing sunglasses.
A polarized lens has a chemical filter laminated inside it, arranged in vertical rows. Think of it as a set of microscopic blinds. Vertical light passes through. Horizontal light, the glare, gets blocked. The result is that the world looks calmer: deeper contrast, richer color, less eye strain over a long day.
What polarization does not do is block ultraviolet radiation. A polarized lens with no UV coating is a lens that looks great and protects your eyes about as well as a pair of tinted party favors.
What UV400 actually means
UV400 is the number that matters for eye health. It means the lens blocks all light wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, which covers 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
This is the specification you should never compromise on. Long-term UV exposure is linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygium, the tissue growth surfers call surfer's eye. Sunglasses without proper UV filtering are actively worse than no sunglasses at all, because the dark tint makes your pupils dilate and lets more unfiltered UV in.

Where polarized wins
Water. Beaches, boats, pools, anywhere light is bouncing off a reflective surface into your face. Polarized lenses cut through it so completely that you can see below the surface of water instead of at it.
Driving. Glare off wet roads and other cars' hoods is the single most fatiguing thing about a long daytime drive. Polarization removes most of it.
Snow and bright sand. Highly reflective ground surfaces are where non-polarized lenses struggle most.
Long days outdoors. If you are outside from breakfast to sunset, the reduced eye strain is genuinely noticeable by evening.
Where non-polarized wins
Screens. This is the big one nobody warns you about. Polarized lenses interact with the LCD displays in phones, car dashboards, ATMs, and gas pumps. Depending on the angle you hold your phone, the screen can go dark or throw a rainbow shimmer. If you are the kind of person who is on her phone constantly, this will irritate you.
Low light and night. Polarized lenses reduce overall light transmission. At a festival after dark, in a bar, at golden hour turning into dusk, non-polarized lenses keep more visual information available to you.
Spotting ice or wet patches. Skiers and cyclists sometimes prefer non-polarized precisely because that glare off a wet or icy patch is useful information about the surface ahead.
Price. Polarization is a real manufacturing cost. All else equal, a non-polarized UV400 lens gets you the same eye protection for less.

Do not think about it as better versus worse. Think about it as daytime versus after dark.

How to tell if sunglasses are actually polarized
Two tests you can run in thirty seconds, useful before you buy anything from a brand you do not know:
The screen test. Hold the sunglasses in front of a phone or laptop screen and slowly rotate them 90 degrees. If the screen darkens dramatically or goes almost black at one angle, the lenses are polarized. If nothing changes, they are not.
The two-pair test. Hold two pairs of sunglasses in front of each other and rotate one. If both are polarized, the overlapping lenses will go nearly opaque at 90 degrees.
Neither test tells you anything about UV protection, which is the frustrating part. UV filtering is invisible. You are relying entirely on the brand being honest about it, which is a good reason to buy from someone willing to state the specification plainly.
Polarized vs non-polarized FAQ
Are polarized sunglasses better for your eyes? No. Polarized and non-polarized lenses offer identical UV protection when both are rated UV400. Polarized lenses reduce glare and eye strain in bright reflective conditions, which is a comfort benefit, not a health one.
Do polarized sunglasses block UV rays? Not inherently. Polarization and UV filtering are separate lens treatments. Many polarized lenses also carry UV400, but you should confirm rather than assume.
Why do my phone screens look weird through my sunglasses? Your lenses are polarized. LCD screens emit polarized light, so at certain angles the two filters cancel each other out. It is normal and it is not a defect.
